To commemorate the 50th anniversary of New College, we were asked by the University of Toronto to develop the College’s vision of an entrance gate to the school and to the remarkable courtyard area at the heart of the campus. In an open and collaborative process with the University and stakeholders we have managed competing interests and developed schematic plans to realize our clients’ goals. We have also produced more detailed construction drawings and costing estimates to ensure that the design falls within budgetary limits.
In our analysis, we recognized that the existing relationship between the building and the street is undeveloped and the areas underused. We have directed design considerations toward bringing new energy and functionality to these spaces and toward realizing a vision of the entrance gate and seating areas, landscaping and the construction of a new piazza, bicycle storage and exterior lighting as well as general site works and improvements to the existing courtyard.
