Carter AI provided sub-consulting architectural services to design a new critical infrastructure emergency power diesel generator building on the north east corner of the site. The diesel house contains two new 1800kW generators and associated switch gear. All equipment, including scrubbers and silencers and a fuel tank supporting 48 hours of diesel run time, are contained within the building.
The architectural design addresses the need for this building to simultaneously present a compelling civic response to the broader community and to resolve the environmental, acoustic and technical challenges associated with the building’s industrial function.
The design of the diesel house reflects the classical language of the site in contemporary building materials and systems and includes a rain screen cladding system constructed in very large format (3m x 6m) porcelain tiles. The building’s cornice is executed in a folded stainless steel plate producing a crisp architectural profile and striking shadow lines over the smooth and minimally articulated façade. The architectural design addressed all urban design and heritage requirements and the project received timely municipal approvals.
