Carter AI was hired to design a Mechanical Fan Building to house mechanical equipment associated with ventilating a new high voltage cable tunnel.
Located near the edge of a ravine, the building sits at the bend of a fast moving avenue. A residential area to east frames the edge of the valley at the crest of the rise. The solution needed to be light to accommodate challenging substrate conditions, environmentally sound in its design and detailing, very quiet and durable.
The building is a simple light box framed in steel and clad in cementious panel at the base with translucent upper wall panels on three sides of the building facing the bend of the Avenue. The building is entirely lined on the interior with acoustic control panels for sound absorption and is equipped with a gantry crane system for equipment replacement and maintenance. A low maintenance green roof was incorporated into the project.
The building is lit entirely by natural light during the day. It is illuminated in the evening.
