David Carter Architects is providing architectural services for a program underway at the UHN Toronto Western Hospital campus to improve the reliability of the mechanical and electrical services serving the Operating Rooms. A large part of this project is the refurbishment and replacement of the central steam, chilled water, and emergency power systems serving the ORs and the rest of the campus.
Flexibility in the design approach was essential to developing a cost-effective and forward-looking solution that adhered to rigid standards governing critical infrastructure. Design considerations included adherence to zoning standards for the 12-storey stack as well as ESA, CSA, and OBC requirements associated with emergency power generating equipment to support critical health care infrastructure.
