St Joseph’s Health Centre – HIRF Infrastructure Renewal
St. Joseph’s Health Centre has served communities in the south west end of Toronto since 1921. The 400 bed hospital campus includes 5 wings and additional ancillary buildings dating from every decade of the last hundred years.
The hospital received funds from the Ministry of Health’s Healthcare Infrastructure Renewal Fund (HIRF) in 2014 to implement a number of pressing infrastructure upgrades to their existing buildings. We worked with the hospital, as their prime consultant, to develop a phased work plan to be executed under a construction management contract to implement the improvements.
Much of the design work was focused on Sunnyside Wing on the east side of the hospital site – a superb example of Art Deco architecture that was badly in need of repair for repurposing as doctors’ offices and clinic space. Improvements included window replacement, exit stair upgrades, refinishing of all areas of the 4th floor including door replacement, flooring, painting, ceiling and lighting upgrades as well as improvements to the washrooms for barrier free upgrades.
The HIRF project also included work on the existing central lounge space to convert this large room into a teaching and medical conference facility complete with contemporary AV and IT systems and flexible seating for large groups and presentations.
