St Joseph’s Health Centre – Mental Health Services Unit Renovation
The St. Joseph’s Mental Health Emergency Services Unit (MHESU) is the first point of contact for individuals who come to the hospital with an emergency crisis related to a mental health condition. The St. Joe’s unit is one of the busiest mental health emergency units in Toronto. The current physical infrastructure of the MHESU required improvements and additional space to provide higher levels of service to the community.
St. Joe’s commissioned David Carter Architects to develop a conceptual plan and a series of images to explore the potential for redevelopment of the unit within their existing space immediately adjacent to the Emergency Department. Planning and design of the new Emergency Services Unit incorporated objectives for better sightlines and visibility, patient and staff security, patient separation and comfort. The conceptual planning diagrams and images are being used to support St. Joe’s Foundation fundraising for the project.
